Wiccan Tools For The Solitary Practitioner

The Broom 
In general, the broom is a purificatory and protective instrument, used to ritually cleanse the area for magic or to guard the home. The broom used for magic, as with all magic tools, should be reserved for this purpose only. Linked to the element of water.

The Wand 
Is an instrument of invocation. The Goddess and God may be called to watch the ritual with words and an uplifted wand. Can be used to direct energy, draw magical symbols/circle on the ground, stir brew in a cauldron. Can point to danger while perfectly balanced on the Witch's palm or arm. Linked to the element of Air.

The Censer 
The censer is an incense burner. Anything can be used as one. If using a bowl, place sand or salt in botton to absorb the heat.

The Cauldron 
Is an ancient vessel for cooking and brewing. The cauldron should be made of iron, resting on three legs, with it's opening smaller than it's widest part.

The Athame (Magic Knife) 
Used to direct the energy raised during rites and spells. Often dull, usually double-edged with a black or dark handle. Can be engraved with magic symbols. Linked with the element of Fire.

The White Handled Knife 
Sometimes called a Bolline, is a practial, working knife used to cut wands or sacred herbs, carve symbols onto candles, wood, clay or wax, and in cutting cords for use in magic. It is white handled to distinguish it from the magic knife.

The Cyrstal Sphere 
Can be placed on the altar to represent the Goddess, used to receive messages from the Gods, or to store energy raised in rituals, and scrying.

The Cup 
Can be made of nearly any material.

The Pentacle 
The pentacle is usually a flat piece of brass, gold, silver, wood, wax or clay, inscribed with symbols. Most common is the five-pointed star.

The Book of Shadows 
Is a Wiccan workbook containing invocations, rituals, spells, runes, rules, and so on. Usually passed from one Wiccab to another. To make your own Book of Shadows, start with a blank book and simply write in this book any spell, rituals, invocations, magical information you have composed or found and would like to preserve.

The Bell 
Used to invoke the Goddess in ritual, ward off evil spells and spirits, to halt storms, to evoke good energies.

Candles 
Used in spells and rituals. Candle colors are used for different purposes.

Herbs and oils 
Used in spells and rituals. Herbs can be made into teas, burned or used in spell sachets. Oils for anointing and burning.

There are many other tools the Wiccan uses, these are the most common.
